Large amount of food and agricultural residues are discharged as municipal wastes. These biogenic waste possess high sugar content being dumped into landfills or incinerated, creating severe environmental challenges. Anaerobic co-digestion (AcD) provides a sustainable valorisation route for biogas production. Biochar addition promotes the microbial activity, electrical conductivity, molar interactions in anaerobic digester. The present review presents an overview influence biochar on product yield during AcD. An different classification is presented. In addition, studies related to application enhance AcD were critically reviewed well future outlook. conducted revealed that process can mitigate buffering capacity toxic inhibitors faced AcD, ultimately yields, shortening lag-phase biodegrading running time. has unique surface functional groups be modified by functionalization adjusting pyrolysis temperature optimal efficiency specific co-substrate combinations feedstocks. process, engineered directed specifically adsorb precise indirect (limonene) direct (NH3, CO2) methane production based active groups, alkalinity material hydrophobicity. Hence, enhanced with right pore sizing pH offset limitations improve efficiency. presented provide in- depth understand process.

Abstract As a bioproduct from the thermal decomposition of biomass, biochar has various applications in diversified field. In this study, bibliometric analysis was conducted to visualize current research status and trends research. A total 5535 documents were collected Web Science Core Collection subjected visualization for field's development 2021 with CiteSpace software. The visual results demonstrate that number publications expanded dramatically 2021, growth trend would continue. China USA most contributing countries terms publications. Based on keyword co-occurrence analyses, “Biochar toxic metal immobilization”, “Biochar-based catalyst biofuel production”, global climate change mitigation”, salinity drought stress amelioration”, amendment composting”, as additives anaerobic digestion” main hotspots field 2021. This indicates multidisciplinary. Regarding hotspots, employment heterogeneous catalysts production gained great attention On contrary, bioremediation using functional bacteria immobilized biochar-assisted advanced oxidation process well-studied but less frequency than other topics Furthermore, future proposed green sustainable biochar. review provides comprehensive overview frontiers, evolution potential directions Graphical
