Free ammonia (FA) has been recently demonstrated as the primary stress factor suppressing microalgal activities in high-ammonium wastewater. However, its inhibition mechanism and self-adaptive regulations remain unknown. This study revealed an initial subsequent self-adaptation of a wastewater-indigenous Chlorella sp. exposed to FA shock. Mutual physiological transcriptome analysis indicated that genetic information processing, photosynthesis, nutrient metabolism were most influenced metabolic processes. Specifically, for behavior, DNA damage was by significantly up-regulated related genes, leading activation cell cycle checkpoints, programmed apoptosis, suppressed growth; shock inhibited photosynthetic including both light dark reactions photoprotection through non-photochemical quenching; ammonium uptake also with glutamine synthetase/glutamine α-oxoglutarate aminotransferase inactivated glutamate dehydrogenase pathway. With respect self-adaptation, possibly enhanced overall viability reprogramming fate; recovered provided substances amino acid biosynthesis, energy production storage, processing; elevated further promoted photodamage repair, photoprotection, antioxidant systems. These findings enrich our knowledge molecular responses shock, facilitating development engineering optimization strategies wastewater bioremediation system.
