Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) supplementation in ruminants' diet as a source of energy and chemical precursors their effect on animal's physiology well-being has long been scientific interest. Production VFAs through anaerobic digestion agro-industrial residues not only creates value but also presents an alternative sustainable approach for ruminant feed supplementation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the bioconversion produced large quantities such apple pomace (AP), thin stillage (Ts), potato protein liquor (PPL) VFAs, fully complying regulations set supplement production. In regard, batch acidogenic fermentation assays (pH 6-10) semi-continuous immersed membrane bioreactor (iMBR) were applied. assays, at pH 10 co-digestion Ts PPL highest concentration (14.2 g/L), indicating yield 0.85 g CODVFAs/g volatile solids (VS)added. The optimum condition was then applied iMBR situ recovery different organic loading rates (OLR). With increasing OLR 3.7 gVS/L.day, 28.6 g/L (1,2 CODVFAs /gVSadded) achieved. Successful long-term (114 days) filtration conducted media with maximum 40 total (TS), facing irreversible fouling final stages. Acidogenic using potential play important role future additive provision biorefining wastes via carboxylate platform, given production from residues.

Volatile fatty acids, intermediate products of anaerobic digestion, are one the most promising biobased products. In this study, effects acidic (pH 5), neutral (without pH adjustment) and alkali 10) on production efficiency composition volatile acids (VFAs) bacterial community profile were analyzed. The sequencing batch reactors fed cheese wastewater as substrate inoculated by granular seed sludge. results showed that improved VFA yield (0.92 at 5; 0.42 10 0.21 gCOD/gVS pH). Furthermore, propionic acid was dominant under both (64 ± 20%) (72 8%), whereas, acetic (23 20%4), (22 3%), butyric (21 4%) valeric (15 8%) almost equally distributed 5. Adaptation to different conditions might steer profile: Bacteroidetes (50.07 2%) 10, Proteobacteria (40.74 7%) Firmicutes (47.64 9%) 5 phylum, respectively. Results indicated plays a significant role in production, composition, structure. However, order gain concrete understanding pH, characterization intracellular extracellular metabolites with dynamics microbial is required.

Utilising ‘wastes’ as ‘resources’ is key to a circular economy. While there are multiple routes waste valorisation, anaerobic digestion (AD)—a biochemical means breakdown organic wastes in the absence of oxygen—is favoured due its capacity handle variety feedstocks. Traditional AD focuses on production biogas and fertiliser products; however, such low-value products combined with longer residence times slow kinetics have paved way explore alternative product platforms. The intermediate steps conventional AD—acidogenesis acetogenesis—have capability produce biohydrogen volatile fatty acids (VFA) which gaining increased attention higher energy density (than biogas) market value, respectively. This review hence focusses specifically VFAs from wastes. With revived interest these products, critical analysis recent literature needed establish current status. Therefore, intensification strategies this area involving three main streams: substrate pre-treatment, parameters recovery discussed detail based reported last decade. techno-economic aspects future pointers clearly highlighted drive research forward relevant areas.
