Despite benefits such as lower water and working volume requirements, thermophilic high solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD) often fails due to the rapid build-up of volatile fatty acids (VFA) associated drop in pH. Use conductive materials can promote HSAD through stimulation direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), while need for their constant dosing impairs economic feasibility. In this work, a two-phase one-reactor system amended with granular activated carbon (GAC) or magnetite was used organic fraction municipal solid waste (OF-MSW). Both GAC addition could alleviate inhibition after VFA ~28-30 g/L. The highest methane yield (286 mL CH4/g VS) achieved 20 g magnetite-added reactors, maximum CH4 production rates (26.38 VS/d) lowest lag-phase (2.83 days) were obtained GAC-added reactors. occurrence pili-like structures on surface suggests that A-type DIET actively proceeded these biofilms. enrichment different syntrophic potentially electroactive microbial groups (Lentimicrobiaceae, Hydrogenispora, Clostridia MBA03, Defluviitoga) (Ruminiclostridium 1, Clostridium Defluviitoga, Defluviitalea, Lentimicrobiaceae) biofilms indicates existence specific preferences nature material. Prediction basic metabolic functions has shown increase abundances cellular processes signals, lipid transport metabolism, resulting enhanced production. Thus, amendment leads structural functional rearrangements initial community. Promising results work spatial separation bulk OF-MSW materials, be useful modelling continuous acidogenic-methanogenic systems good recovery materials.

Abstract Waste activated sludge (WAS) is attracting attention for its energy and resource potential. Anaerobic digestion (AD) can be used to efficiently recover resources stabilize pollutants in WAS, with biochar emerging as an ideal additive boost this process. However, the low abundance of surface functional groups small pore structure raw may limit performance AD WAS. These limitations overcome by using biochar. In review, preparation modification methods role WAS are systematically summarized discussed. Notably, electron transfer, buffering effects, microbial immobilization, alleviation inhibitory modulation analyzed. Additionally, impacts on digestate utilization, pollutant removal, carbon fixation Special given ability promote circular economy neutrality. Finally, future perspectives use presented. The aim review provide insights into application from perspective improvement, economy. Graphical

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective bioconversion technology widely used to treat agricultural waste and reduce environmental pollution. Although AD has been commonly applied practical social needs, low yield reactor instability limit its performance.
