In contrast to nitrification-denitrification microorganisms that convert ammonia nitrogen in hypersaline wastewater into for discharge, this research utilizes sludge enriched with salt-tolerant assimilation bacteria (STAB) assimilate organic matter and ectoine - a biomass high economic value resistance external osmotic pressure. The study investigates the relationship between synthesis of removal efficiency STAB three sequencing batch reactors (SBR) operated at different salinities (50, 75, 100 g/L) concentrations. reveals that, under low concentration carbon sources (TOC/N=4, NH4+-N=60 mg/L), SBR increased by 14.51% 17.25% within 5 d 2 d, respectively, when salinity from 50 g/L 75 g/L. Under (TOC/N=8, NH4+-N =60 stabilized 80.20%, 76.71%, 72.87%, total was finally 80.47%, 73.15%, 65.53%, respectively. performance ammonium-assimilating is more sustainable salinity, while it short-term explosive salinity. Moreover, intracellular found be related behavior. Empirical formulas confirm synthesizes nutrients through assimilation, has threshold defect (150 mg/gVss). metabolism pathways constructed using Kyoto Encyclopedia Genes Genomes (KEGG). findings suggest once reaches saturation, inhibits continuous

Acidic partial nitritation (PN) has emerged to be a promisingly stable process in wastewater treatment, which can simultaneously achieve nitrite accumulation and about half of ammonium reduction. However, directly applying anaerobic oxidation (anammox) treat the acidic PN effluent (pH 4-5) is susceptible inhibition anammox bacteria. Here, this study demonstrated adaptation pH moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). By feeding laboratory-scale MBBR with = 4.6 ± 0.2), an was self-sustained range 5 - 6. Yet, high total nitrogen removal efficiency over 80% at practical loading rate up 149.7 3.9 mg N/L/d achieved. Comprehensive microbial assessment, including amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, cryosection-FISH, qPCR, identified that Candidatus Brocadia, close known neutrophilic members, dominant Anammox bacteria were found present inner layer thick biofilms but barely surface thin biofilms. Results from batch tests also showed activity could maintained when subjected concentration 10 N/L, whereas completely inhibited after disturbing structure. These results collectively indicate enriched not inherently acid-tolerant. Instead, achieved performance under condition likely due stratification protection. This result highlights configuration as useful solution address effluent, suggests may play critical role protecting many nature environments.
