Chlorinated organic pollutants constitute a significant category of persistent due to their widespread presence in the environment, which is primarily attributed expansion agricultural and industrial activities. These are characterized by persistence, potent toxicity, capability for long-range dispersion, emphasizing importance eradication mitigate environmental pollution. While conventional methods removing chlorinated encompass advanced oxidation, catalytic bioremediation, utilization biochar has emerged as prominent green efficacious method recent years. Here we review biochar's role remediating typical organics, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), triclosan (TCS), trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), chlorobenzenes (CBs). We focus on impact material properties adsorption mechanisms organics. This highlights use sustainable eco-friendly pollutants, especially when combined with biological or chemical strategies. Biochar facilitates electron transfer efficiency between microorganisms, promoting growth dechlorinating bacteria mitigating toxicity organics through adsorption. Furthermore, can activate processes such oxidation nano zero-valent iron, generating free radicals decompose compounds. observe broader application bioprocesses treating soil, reducing impacts. Conversely, water-based integrating proved more effective, leading superior purification results. contributes theoretical practical pollutants.

Biochar refers to the carbonaceous black solid residue product obtained from thermochemical decomposition of waste biomass typically under oxygen-limited environment. There are many methods for biochar production streams, prominent pyrolysis, torrefaction, and hydrothermal carbonization. However, yield properties depend mainly on process parameters, such as temperature, residence time, heating rate, gas environment, feedstock types, among others. This review provides current state-of-art in by assessing parametric influence conditions yields, properties, compositions across carbonization their variants. Furthermore, compares contrasts different techniques with respect mass energy at similar conditions. It was found that irrespective techniques, operating typically, 150–300 °C hydrothermal, 200–300 300–600 remain most influential parameter compositions. While char yields comparable various conversion they had strong effect properties. Woody crop residues dominant feedstocks studied due attractive bioenergy (volatile matter >80% ash content <15%). Lastly, slow pyrolysis is optimized technique a typical 25–50 wt%, carbon 30–70 wt% calorific value 10–30 MJ/kg 450 lignocellulosic biomass. Other critical findings have been summarised, perspectives future research were provided. Overall, assessment can serve directive tool selecting an ideal technology high quality production.

Abstract Integrating innovation and environmental responsibility has become important in pursuing sustainable industrial practices the contemporary world. These twin imperatives have stimulated research into developing methods that optimize processes, enhancing efficiency effectiveness while mitigating undesirable ecological impacts. This objective is exemplified by emergence of biochar derived from thermo-chemical transformation biomass. review examines production their potential applications across various aspects iron steel industries (ISI). The technical, economic, implications integrating ISI were explored. Slow pyrolysis hydrothermal carbonization are most efficient for higher yield (25–90%). Biochar several advantages- heating value (30–32 MJ/kg), more porosity (58.22%), significantly larger surface area (113 m 2 /g) compared to coal coke. However, presence often reduces fluidity a coal-biochar mixture. findings highlighted implementation come with costs, primarily due expense substitute fuels traditional fossil fuels. economic viability societal desirability highly uncertain vary based on factors such as location, feedstock type, scale, pricing, among others. Furthermore, biomass supply chain another factor which determines its large scale implementation. Despite these challenges, there opportunities reduce emissions BF-BOF operations utilizing technologies. Overall, present study explored diverse aiming contribute ongoing manufacturing practices, underscoring significance shaping environmentally conscious future.
