Abstract Biochar, a black carbon material produced by high‐temperature, low‐oxygen pyrolysis of organic solids, can improve soil properties and realize neutrality. However, how to effectively produce apply biochar in the face complex environment intractable widespread land degradation is still uncertain. This review based on 1073 sets data 316 publications address this issue. Firstly, impact different process parameters, namely feedstocks, temperature activation physicochemical are systematically summarized. Secondly, effect problems reviewed from perspective interaction between characteristics. The “matching” properties, level environmental factors be used design desired biochar. Finally, future research should focus aging costs benefits using concept “artificial intelligence designed biochar” discussed degree automation production predictability suitability its application for specific cases.
