Abstract Microalgal solutions to clean waste streams and produce biomass were evaluated in Nordic conditions during winter, spring, autumn Southeast Sweden. The study investigated nitrogen (N) removal, quality, safety by treating industrial leachate water with a polyculture of local microalgae bacteria open raceway ponds, supplied CO 2 effluent. Total N (TN) removal was higher spring (1.5 g −2 d −1 ), due beneficial light compared winter (0.1 0.09 ). Light, TN, species influenced the microalgal community (dominated Chlorophyta), while bacterial remained stable throughout seasons large proportion cyanobacteria. Winter promoted protein (19.6–26.7%) whereas lipids carbohydrates highest (11.4–18.4 15.4–19.8%). Biomass toxin metal content below levels for fodder, but potential presence toxic strains, biofuels or fertilizer could be suitable applications algal biomass. Practitioner points from autumn. autotrophic growth. Use made cultivation more on seasonal (light) short‐term (N‐species changes) scale. Toxic elements produced legal thresholds upcycling.
