ABSTRACT The boundary effect, namely the infants’ failures to compare small and large numerosities, is well documented in studies using visual stimuli. prevailing explanation that numerical system used process sets up 3 incompatible with employed for numbers >3. This study investigates effect 10‐month‐old infants presented linguistic sequences. In Condition 1 (2 vs. 3), can differentiate syllable sequences better performance 2‐syllable sequence, which imposes a lower memory load. 2 4) revealed are capable of discriminating across bounds, relatively higher 4‐syllable possibly encoded as one ensemble. offers evidence that, when processing sounds, flexibly deal representations no boundaries or incompatibilities between them. Simultaneously encoding units different magnitudes might aid early speech beyond limits.

Serial dependence is a recently described phenomenon by which the perceptual evaluation of stimulus biased previously attended one. By integrating stimuli over time, serial believed to ensure stable conscious experience. Despite increasing studies in humans, it unknown if process occurs also other species. Here, we assessed whether dogs. To this aim, dogs were trained on quantity discrimination task before being presented with where one discriminanda was preceded task-irrelevant stimulus. If are susceptible dependence, hypothesized influence perception subsequently quantity. Our results revealed that perceived currently be closer briefly before, accordance dependence. The direction and strength effect comparable those observed humans. Data regarding dogs' attention during suggest used two different estimation mechanisms, an indication higher cognitive mechanism involved process. present first empirical evidence extends beyond suggesting shared phylogenetically distant mammals.

Abstract Our intuitive sense of number allows rapid estimation for the objects (numerosity) in a scene. How does continuous nature neural information processing create discrete representation number? A neurocomputational model with divisive normalization explains this process and existing data; however, successful should not only explain data but also generate novel predictions. Here, we experimentally test predictions to evaluate its merit explaining mechanisms numerosity perception. We did so by consideration coherence illusion: underestimation arrays containing heterogeneous compared homogeneous items. First, established existence illusion homogeneity manipulations both area orientation items an array. Second, despite behavioral similarity, predicted that these two illusions reflect activity different stages visual processing. Finally, evoked potentials from electroencephalography experiment confirmed predictions, showing modulate brain responses at distinct latencies topographies. These results demonstrate utility perception, according which perception is byproduct canonical neurocomputations exist throughout pathway.
