This study presents the excess sludge minimisation in a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) system by an Oxic Settling Anaerobic (OSA) process. The pilot plant was fed with real wastewater and OSA operated two different hydraulic retention times (HRT), respectively 4 (Period II) 6 h III) compared to MBR I). Multiple parameters/variables were monitored: minimisation, nitrogen carbon removal, membrane fouling, biokinetic behaviour through respirometry. With respect current literature, greenhouse gas emissions also here monitored, often neglected. Results demonstrated that combining systems can significantly reduce production (89.7%, Period III 59.7% II, However, presented better PO4–P removal efficiencies but worse performances other parameters (COD, NH4 Total Nitrogen). No substantial variation fouling obtained over experimental periods. Finally, HRT increase anaerobic reactor promoted N2O–N inside unaerated reactors, highlighting need for trade-off between GHG emission.

ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) are a pollutant that increasingly threatens freshwater ecosystems and requires effective solutions for their removal. The aim of this study is to review current filtration methods used remove MPs from environments. This uses systematic method existing literature regarding techniques removing MPs. Data were collected various scientific sources published between 2015 2023. analyzed include traditional advanced technology. results show technologies such as nanofiltration biofiltration have high potential in freshwater. However, each technique has its own challenges, including removal efficiency implementation cost. conclusion an dealing with MP pollution ecosystems; however, further needed address the challenges. provides in‐depth insights can help develop more efficient policies managing future.
