Schools, key symbols of progress and innovation, require particular attention regarding energy efficiency, which is considered a strategic priority in sustainable development policies. Improving efficiency schools reduces costs environmental impact while educating students the community about sustainability. Ensuring good air quality thermal comfort also crucial for student well-being performance, resulting improved productivity, health, concentration. This study shows that proper ventilation can maintain by exploiting heat loads generated environment equipment. Yearly hourly analyses were conducted terms internal operative temperature on simplified school prototype located Mediterranean city following UNI EN ISO 52016 standard. Thermal was evaluated accordance with 16798-1 standard tested different exchange rates. The results showed heating system would typically operate 1000 h per year, excluding holiday periods when teaching activities are suspended. With implementation suitable system, however, need could be removed.

Passive cooling strategies were implemented in 11 school buildings Barcelona within a pilot project to improve thermal conditions. The present study aimed evaluate the intervention's impact on students' comfort and well-being at school. A quasi-experimental pre-post based mixed methods was conducted. Quantitative data collected through self-reported questionnaires administrated sixth-grade students 21 schools (11 an intervention group, IG, 10 comparison CG). authors measured changes satisfaction with indoor temperature air quality (IAQ), presence of bothering factors (temperature too high, low, unpleasant odours, lighting problems), performance. Difference-in-difference analysis conducted differences between IG CG changes. Qualitative photovoice-based sessions (59 sixth grade students) interviews (7 teachers) IG. thematic content identified three main categories: perceptions environmental conditions, environment-related health well-being, environment their reported learning. findings show positive among perceived temperature, quality, school, while suggest no significant problems, performance, relation CG. Compared CG, perceiving high significantly decreased girls, odours only boys. In qualitative assessment, participants that transformations improved visual comfort, IAQ, odours. Participants also reduction fatigue, stress, irritability, stifling sensation, as well enhanced concentration. This highlights benefits passive design for student's Mediterranean climates suggests need extend these interventions other similar contexts.
