ABSTRACT This work describes the synthesis and characterization of a novel hydrogel system based on pectin (PT) functionalized with thiol maleimide groups cross‐linked by thiol‐maleimide click chemistry. Thiolated PT (PT‐SH) maleimide‐modified (PT‐Ma) precursors were synthesized carbodiimide‐mediated amidation confirmed elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR spectroscopy. The resulting exhibited gelation efficiency over 80%, swelling degrees ranging from 44% to 80% depending cross‐linking density, pH‐sensitive behavior maximum at pH 8. demonstrated high mechanical stability, compressive strengths 20.8–33.2 kPa, increasing density. As model drug, ibuprofen was encapsulated efficiencies up 337 mg/g released in controlled fashion. In vitro release studies showed slower acidic environments, which ranged 22% 53% within 6–10 h, faster slightly alkaline environment, consistent profile hydrogel. Such properties underline hydrogel's potential for sustained drug delivery. Pectin hydrogels, upon cross‐linking, are hereby presented be strong platform biomedical applications properties, behavior, performance
