Due to the emergence of new diseases, drug discovery is an ever-exciting field science. Researchers have shifted their focus from chemical-based medicines drugs natural origin and structural synthetic analogues solve problem developing antibiotic resistance detrimental impacts existing chemical medications. Lichens are still one least explored sources for discovery. These slow-growing forms a rich source some exceptional secondary metabolites known collectively as lichenochemicals. The significant proportion these lichenochemicals bioactive compounds with multiple pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial, anticancer, free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic neuroprotective abilities also high in nutritional values, making this uncanny combination algae fungi, together metabolites, so well renowned traditional indigenous medicine. Lichens produce a plethora of primary and secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites have several biological functions that can be used for human health. Recent studies described their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimycotic, antibiotic/antiviral activities. However, attention has mainly been focused on antiproliferative, cytotoxic, anticancer effects. Because there are many publications describing the molecular mechanisms leading to effects lichen metabolites, aim this review is summarize results from current research with main emphasis atranorin, usnic gyrophoric acid.

Background: The development of effective inhibitors that can inhibit amyloid β (A ) peptides aggregation and promote neurite outgrowth is crucial for the possible treatment Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Lobaria (Schreb.) Hoffm., a traditional Chinese medicine used in Himalaya region inflammatory diseases, contains depsides/depsidones (DEPs) such as gyrophoric acid, norstictic stictic acid known their anti-cancer anti-inflammation properties.
