The preparation of novel nitrilium derivatives closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H11NCR]−, R = n-C3H7, i-C3H7, 4-C6H4CH3, 1-C10H7 is described. Although Lipscomb predicted in 1977 that supra-icosahedral boron clusters would be viable, their synthesis has been impeded by the unavailability of appropriate synthetic methodologies. Herein, we report first examples open 16-vertex oblato-hypho-titanaborane [(Cp*Ti)2B14H17R] (1: R = H; 2: Me) having a non-Wadean 19-skeletal-electron-pair count. Interestingly, these show six-membered [Ti2B4] face, which could lead to closo-19-vertex clusters.

Here, we present composites and materials that can be prepared starting with boron hydride cluster compounds (decaborane, decahydro-closo-decaborate dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate anions carboranes). Recent examples of their utilization as protective coatings including using them to synthesize carbide, nitride, metal borides, metal-containing composites, neutron shielding are discussed. The data generalized demonstrate the versatile application based on carboranes in various fields.

Gold(III) complexation with the octadecahydrido-eicosaborate anion [B20H18]2− was studied for first time. It found that when gold(III) complexes [Au(L)Cl2]BF4 (L = bipy, phen) reacted [B20H18]2−, [Au(L)Cl2]2[B20H18] were isolated. The compounds consisted of a cationic complex [Au(L)Cl2]+ and hydridoborate cluster as counterion. X-ray diffraction studies revealed weak B–H...Au interactions both compounds. Note more reactive anions [BnHn]2− (n 10, 12) in similar reactions resulted gold mirror reactions.
