This study analyzes the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Ecuador, with a focus on its application across core business functions. Using stratified random sample 385 firms from most representative economic sectors, survey instrument was designed to assess three dimensions: access AI-enabling conditions, degree AI utilization, organizational characteristics. The results reveal that remains limited highly concentrated marketing-related functions, particularly content generation social media automation, minimal implementation finance, logistics, human resource management. also identifies main barriers hindering adoption. lack qualified professionals unavailability structured databases emerged as critical obstacles, followed by financial capacity. One-way ANOVA Kruskal–Wallis tests confirmed significant differences levels based company size sector, especially areas such inventory optimization design prototyping. These findings highlight gap between potential technologies their real-world Ecuadorian MSMEs. They underscore need for targeted strategies focused workforce training, digital infrastructure development, institutional support promote broader more effective integration.
