Water is essential in all aspects of life, being the defining characteristic our planet and even body. Regrettably, water pollution increasingly becoming a challenge due to novel anthropogenic pollutants. Of particular concern are emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), term used not only cover newly developed compounds but also discovered as environment. Aside from contamination, higher temperature more extreme less predictable weather conditions projected affect availability distribution. Therefore, wastewater treatment has become valuable resource its reuse an important issue that must be carried out efficiently. Among technologies considered remediation processes, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) regarded promising materials for elimination EOCs since they present many properties commend them treatment: large surface area, easy functionalizable cavities, some stable water, synthesized at scale, etc. This review highlights advances use MOFs (adsorption and/or degradation) classifying by nature contaminant.

The variety of functionalities and porous structures inherent to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) together with the facile tunability their properties makes these materials suitable for a wide range existing emerging applications. Many applications are based on processes involving interaction MOFs guest molecules. To optimize certain process or successfully design new one, thorough knowledge is required about physicochemical characteristics mechanisms obtain such important information, various complementary analytical techniques applied, among which vibrational spectroscopy (IR Raman) plays an role indispensable in many cases. In this review, we critically examine reported IR Raman spectroscopies as powerful tools initial characterization MOF studying gases. Both advantages limitations technique considered, cases where preferable highlighted. Peculiarities specific gases some inconsistent band assignments also emphasized. Summarizing broad possibilities spectroscopies, conclude that it can be applied combinations other explicitly establish structure, properties, reactivity MOFs.
