Breast cancer exists in multiple subtypes some of which still lack a targeted and effective therapy. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been proposed as an emerging anti-cancer treatment modality. In this study, we investigated the effects direct indirect CAP driven by advantageous nanosecond pulsed discharge on breast cells different malignant phenotypes estrogen receptor (ER) status, major factor prognosis therapeutic management cancer. The main reactive species liquid (i.e. H2O2, NO2-/NO3- ) gas phase were determined function operational parameters time, pulse voltage frequency), while pre-treatment with ROS scavenger NAC revealed impact treatment. induced intense phenotypic changes apoptosis both ER+ ER- cells, is associated mitochondrial pathway evidenced increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio cleavage PARP-1. Interestingly, significantly reduced CD44 protein expression (a stem cell marker matrix receptor), differentially affected proteases inflammatory mediators. Collectively, findings present study suggest that suppresses growth regulates several effectors tumor microenvironment thus it could represent efficient approach for distinct subtypes.
