The integration of microalgae and activated sludge (MAS) processes presents a promising method for recycling nutrients from animal digestates. However, the effects operational factors such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) on this process remain unclear. Therefore, study utilized semi-continuous photobioreactor systems with working volume 800 mL to investigate impact three different HRTs (4 d, 6 8 d) performance MAS nutrient diluted dairy liquid digestate (DLD). Results indicated that d HRT yielded highest biomass concentration, ranging 2.20 2.52 g/L. extending beyond decreased productivity. growth favoured removal, C. vulgaris primary contributor. Longer improved achieved total nitrogen (TN) removal 87.68 ± 4.57 % complete phosphorus elimination. Complete ammonia (TAN) occurred when ≥ d. All exhibited poor COD due biodegradability DLD algal organic matter (AOM) produced by microalgae, 16.43 3.65 (8 HRT). Metagenomic analysis revealed affected bacterial communities significantly, richness diversity occurring at HRT. Dominant phyla in all were Proteobacteria Bacteroidetes. enhanced lipid accumulation reduced carbohydrate contents but had minimal effect higher heating value (HHV), which ranged 20.63 21.72 MJ kg−1. These findings have significant implications developing efficient sustainable MAS-based treatment systems.
