Based on recent interest and the importance of ongoing climate change catastrophe, this article provides basics global carbon cycle modelling as required for assessment degree neutrality biomass energy, its underlying dynamics. It is aimed at clarifying question “Are fuels neutral?”. The “Combined Energy Biosphere Model” (CEBM) computes annual flows including growth decay plants 2.5 × 2.5° grid elements continents’ surface offers detailed results changes after implementation large-scale energy strategies worldwide. main (and possibly unexpected) effect long-term depletion soil organic compartment extraction fuels. When comparing CEBM model runs using (i) sources (ii) carbon-free (such solar or wind), it becomes quantitatively clear already theoretical level (i.e., even without taking into account efficiency losses) that only “half neutral” ideally assumed, to express a rule thumb—mainly because depletion. Still, will play an important role when fighting warming, if efforts lower demand are preferable fundamental strategy.
