Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) is a promising advanced oxidation process with benefits of excellent capability, simplicity, and no secondary pollutants. γ-Al2O3 spheres are the most widely used support materials for developing high-performance catalysts HCO, however, loading mechanism active metals on spherical supports remained underexplored. In this study, iron taken as an example, it clarified that anchoring (3-5 mm) involves terminal hydroxyl groups γ-Al2O3, which allow homogeneous distribution species within spheres. It also found iron-loaded prepared by higher group content, pretreated calcination at 300 oC, exhibited performance, good stability repeatability HCO. The catalyst was effective due to dispersion small oxide particles, abundant oxygen vacancy sites (OVs), facilitated formation hydrated -OH Fe-center ([Fe-OH]) in Experiments DFT calculations showed [Fe-OH] act promote ozone adsorption dissociation. This study not only deepens our understanding role surface metal Al2O3 but provides important theoretical basis experimental guidance design application catalysts.
