Phosphorus (P) discharge from anthropogenic sources, notably sewage effluent and agricultural runoff, significantly contributes to eutrophication in aquatic environments. Stringent regulations have heightened the need for effective P removal technologies wastewater treatment processes. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current methods, focusing on both biological chemical approaches. Biological treatments discussed include enhanced activated sludge systems, trickling filters, biofilm reactors, constructed wetlands. The efficiency microbial absorption novel biotechnological integrations, such as use microalgae fungi, are also examined. Chemical reviewed encompass application metal salts, advanced oxidation processes chlorination, ozonation, Fenton reaction, well emerging techniques including Electro-Fenton process photocatalysis. Analytical methods P, spectrophotometric fractionation analyses, evaluated understand dynamics wastewater. critically assesses strengths limitations each method, aiming identify most sustainable solutions management treatment. integration innovative strategies is emphasized crucial optimizing ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Abstract Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS) is commonly used as a preservative and fungicide in leather production that leads to its presence tannery wastewater. As typical organic phosphorus pollutant, THPS poses potential threats both the ecological environment human health. Herein, this investigation microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI)/O 3 process eliminate from aquatic environments. The mZVI/O system demonstrated superior removal performance, achieving high efficiencies of total (TP), (OP), chemical oxygen demand (COD) compared traditional systems (i.e., mZVI alone, O Fe 2+ /O , 3+ ). Moreover, batch experiments were conducted optimize key operational parameters (such initial pH, dosage, concentration, stirring rate). TP, OP, COD reached 97.10%, 97.31%, 81.56% within 20 min, respectively, under optimized conditions. Based on experimental results characterization analysis, degradation mechanism by was primarily combination oxidation (60.37% ± 7.41%) flocculation (39.63% 7.41%). Furthermore, unprecedented performance various actual wastewater samples. eliminated pollutants improved biodegradability This study not only establishes robust, cost-effective, environmentally sound approach for OP but also offers substantial promise practical treatment applications.
