Periodate (PI) shows promising potential as an oxidant for wastewater treatment; however, its impact on the toxicity of remains unknown. Here, we found that with 100 μM PI addition, cytotoxicity increased from 4.8 to 7.6 mg-Phenol/L 9.5 12.8 mg-Phenol/L, and genotoxicity 0.3 0.9 μg-4-NQO/L. Interestingly, hypoiodous acid (HOI) was not detected during reaction, there no observed increase in concentration total organic iodine (TOI). CHON components dissolved matter changed most obviously oxidation, which might serve primary precursors toxic byproducts. Cytotoxicity typical nitrogen-containing tryptophan, lysine, phenylalanine, tyrosine after oxidation 14.7, 2.4, 4.1, 3.2 respectively. four nonhalogenated aromatic nitrogenous byproducts (N-DBPs) 3-hydroxyquinoline, 4-hydroxyquinoline, benzopyridine, benzopyrrole were confirmed using standards, such 2-formylbenzonitrile tentatively proposed. The comparable those known N-DBPs nitrosamines, suggesting attention should be given these but two PI-treated samples concentrations 0.8, 0.98, 0.52, 0.0038, 18.28, 1.50, 0.57, 0.0074 μg/L, respectively, contributions less than 1.5% overall cytotoxicity. Further investigations are warranted elucidate drivers wastewater.
