Abstract Microplastic pollution has become an increasingly pervasive issue worldwide, but little is known about its effects on the soil environment. A microcosm experiment was conducted using low‐density polyethylene microplastics to estimate effect of microplastic nutrient cycling and microbial community structure. The results showed that addition significantly promoted carbon dioxide emissions not nitrous oxide emissions. Soil pH, dissolved organic carbon, ammonia nitrogen, contents total phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), ratios gram‐positive bacteria gram‐negative saturated monounsaturated PLFAs increased. In addition, nitrate nitrogen fungi bacteria, iso‐branched acids anteiso‐branched acids, cyclopropyl precursor decreased with increasing addition. abundance oxidizing nitrite reductase ( nirS ) had functional genes archaea, nirK ), reductase. principal coordinate analysis bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene fungal internal transcribed spacer in treatments revealed communities formed obvious cluster. average some species tolerance degradability microplastics, such as Nocardioidaceae, Amycolatopsis , Aeromicrobium Cytophagaceae, Betaproteobacteria, Rhodoplanes Mortierella higher than control treatment. suggested have influences may affect global cycles.
