In the perspective of energy sustainability, biomass is widely used renewable domestic with low cost and easy availability. Increasing studies have reported health impacts toxic substances from burning emissions. To make proper use as residential solid energy, evaluation its risks environmental necessity. Empirical on characteristics emissions would provide scientific data drive development advanced technologies. This review focuses emission four substances, including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), elemental carbon (EC), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted burning, which received increasing attention in recent worldwide. We focus developments empirical studies, methods measurements, technical factors. The influences key factors are combustion technology type biomass. sampling testing summarized associated various corresponding parameters, there no standard for sector. Integration findings previous indicated that modern technologies result a 2–4 times reduction, compared traditional stoves. Types dominant contributors to certain may help invention or implementation targeted control implications evidence push improvements establish appropriate strategies improve prevention hazards.
