Abstract Formate has been considered an inactive molecule and thus cannot be further reduced under CO 2 reduction conditions, which limits its widespread application as feedstock. Here we present electrochemical redox conversion of formate to through the potential‐dependent generation carbon dioxide radical anions (CO ⋅ − ) on Fe−Co layered double hydroxides (Fe−Co LDHs) subsequent Au catalysts. We electrodeposition protocol for synthesis LDHs with precise composition control find that Fe 1 Co 4 exhibits a promising potential window formation between 1.14 1.4 V optimized at 1.24 neutral pH condition. determined via electron paramagnetic resonance >1.4 differential mass spectrometry.
