The presence of heavy metal ions in soil, air and water constitutes an important global environmental threat, as these accumulate throughout the food chain, contributing to rise chronic diseases, including, amongst others, cancer kidney failure. To date, many efforts have been made for their detection, but there is still a need development sensitive, low-cost, portable devices able conduct on-site detection ions. In this work, we combine microfluidic technology electrochemical sensing plastic chip selective utilizing DNAzymes immobilized between platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), demonstrating reliable solution pollution monitoring. For realization microfluidic-based ion device, fast easy-to-implement fabrication method based on photolithography dry photosensitive layers proposed. As proof concept, demonstrate Pb2+ using prototype device.

The contamination of air, water and soil by heavy metal ions is one the most serious problems plaguing environment. These are characterized a low biodegradability high chemical stability can affect humans animals, causing severe diseases. In addition to typical analysis methods, i.e., liquid chromatography (LC) or spectrometric methods (i.e., atomic absorption spectroscopy, AAS), there need for development inexpensive, easy-to-use, sensitive portable devices detection at point interest. To this direction, microfluidic lab-on-chip (LOC) fabricated with novel materials scalable microfabrication have been proposed as promising approach realize such systems. This review focuses on recent advances used important toxic ions, namely, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) chromium (Cr) ions. Particular emphasis given materials, fabrication realization in order provide complete overview existing technology well limitations challenges that should be addressed improve commercial uptake LOC environmental monitoring applications.
