Abstract The presence of antibiotics in wastewater discharges significantly affects the environment, mainly due to generation bacterial populations with multiple antibiotic resistances. cometabolic capacity nitrifying sludge simultaneously remove ammonium (NH 4 + ) and emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), including antibiotics, has been reported. In present study, removal 50 mg ampicillin (AMP)/L by cultures associated biosorption biotransformation processes was evaluated a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. contribution enzymes (ammonium monooxygenase (AMO) nitrite oxidoreductase (NOR)) β-lactamases AMP biodegradation using specific inhibitors cultures. 100% eliminated after 5 h since first cycle operation. maintained its oxidizing total consumption 102.0 ± 2.5 NH -N/L 9 h, however, addition altered nitrite-oxidizing process nitrification, recovering 30 cycles later at both physiological kinetic level. activity improved along operating for nitrification processes. elimination 24% attributed 76% biotransformation, wherein AMO enzyme contributed 95% biodegradation.
