The extensive use of veterinary antibiotics worldwide has led to their increasing accumulation in aquatic environments, adversely affecting both ecosystems and human health leading the emergence antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic residues enter water bodies primarily through wastewater effluent discharge, agricultural runoff, improper disposal pharmaceuticals. Several emerging technologies have been developed response challenge antibiotic contamination wastewater. Among these, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including photocatalysis, demonstrated significant potential for degradation. Photocatalysis relies on production powerful oxidants degrade pollutants under simulated or solar-light irradiation. Apart from well-known TiO2, various photocatalytic materials used with metal oxides frontline. In this context, doping reduce bandgap energy enhance absorption visible light charge-carrier separation. Doping non-metals carbon-based is another attractive alternative that promotes better degradation efficiency suppresses recombination. Moreover, designs, such as heterojunction constructions, effective charge separation wider utilization spectrum. This comprehensive review summarizes recent advances design, characterization, efficiency, mechanisms photocatalysts degrading wastewater, along toxicity assessments resulting transformation products. By examining these parameters, current body knowledge consolidated, providing valuable insights into purification removal. Finally, by emphasizing critical environmental importance streamlined photocatalysis challenges associated scaling up process, highlights its feasibility mitigating pollution, thereby safeguarding reducing risks resistance.
