This review addresses the issue of replacing manufactured microplastics in seed coatings used agriculture. Firstly, it focuses on policy and regulatory actions taken at a global level. There is no consensus within scientific community definition microplastic and, more generally, classification plastic debris. Nevertheless, several decision schemes have been proposed an attempt to define notion microplastics. The different criteria relevant this definition, such as size, physical state, chemical structure, origin, persistence microplastics, are discussed, with comparison being made between REACH regulation literature. Seed production processing also functions explained order gain better understanding properties be considered substitution strategy for currently main challenges multiple; substitutes must provide same performance microplastics: (i) improving adherence treatment seed, (ii) distributing evenly over (iii) reducing amount dust-off when handling treated (iv) flowability, which particularly important during sowing stage, all while preserving physiological seed. Substitute polymers according desired functional properties: two families biopolymers were identified literature: polysaccharides proteins. Among them, 13 6 polymers, respectively, complied regulation, demonstrating adhesion, dust reduction performances, preservation quality particular. work aims guide future studies coatings, highlight research needs area. It based analysis discussion literature, identifying listing potential substitutes.

Little information exists on the interactions between microfibres (MFs) and marine macroalgae. In this study, translucent green seaweed, Ulva lactuca, has been exposed to ∼2 mg L-1 suspensions of MFs prepared from dryer lint under controlled conditions, with alga surface remaining in seawater subsequently counted characterised. were mainly <2 mm cellulosic, contained various additives chemicals used textile treatment. Interactions U. lactuca spatially heterogeneous but correcting for pre-existent surface, mean trapping efficiencies a dry mass area basis 252 mL g-1 0.858 cm-2, respectively. Despite heterogeneity, there was evidence differential based fibre colour length. amphiphilic algal are likely both hydrophobic electrostatic not fully reversible, only ∼30 % trapped released into clean seawater. Surface and subsurface sediment samples (n = 16) from the highly urbanised inner Thames Estuary (UK) have been physically chemically characterised analysed for anthropogenic microdebris. Sediments were gravelly sands throughout heavily contaminated by lead (Pb, up to 12,500 mg kg−1) zinc (Zn, 9500 kg−1). Microfibres of mm-dimensions retroreflective glass microbeads (median diameter 188 μm) used in road markings most abundant types microdebris present, concentrations (as numbers, N) on a dry weight basis spatially heterogeneous (ranging about 4000 60,000 N kg−1 100 28,000 kg−1, respectively). Nevertheless, two particle significantly correlated both displayed an inverse, non-linear relationship with grain size. Road marking paint fragments different colours detected cases 13) but quantification was difficult because analytical constraints related size, shape, colour, fragmentation encrustation. Concentrations 500 Pb determined isolated particles are unlikely make significant contribution pollution sediments. Overall, our observations suggest that stormwater runoff is source multiple urban estuaries, additional, direct atmospheric deposition contributing microfibre accumulation. More generally, it recommended studies microplastics consider additional debris characteristics better understanding their sources transport.
