The tremendous plastic production and poor post-use management are current future sources of environmental human contamination due to their degradation products: microplastics nanoplastics (MNPLs). Methodological developments have allowed MNPLs be detected in an increasing variety foods, as well stool colonic mucosa. It was suggested early that the direct contact between intestinal tissues could represent a potential risk for health. In order assess this, over last 3 years, numerous studies evaluated impact MNPL ingestion on homeostasis rodents. This comprehensive review reports preclinical published January 2021 2024, analyzes contributions shortcomings. shows evidence is accumulating toxicity spherical MNPLs, which lead pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidative, barrier-disruptive dysbiotic effects.
