Our children are our future. As noted in the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), “There is no resource that more vital to continued existence and integrity of tribes than their children”. Native Americans have always fought for prioritized child wellbeing will continue strive self-determination. Primarily focusing on Indigenous people area now known as United States, this article first discusses historical underpinnings American experiences welfare systems ways historically exercised self-determination protection matters, including resistance boarding schools removal, strategies retain authority with ICWA.
