Abstract Achieving net-zero emission goals is a critical challenge for Sub-Saharan Africa, region burdened with distinct economic and environmental pressures. This study employs comparative machine learning (ML) framework, utilizing Decision Tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, Elastic Net, Lasso, AdaBoost models, to predict CO₂ emissions based on key socioeconomic energy-related factors, including energy efficiency, government stability, clean energy, GDP per capita, population. The Forest model outperformed others, achieving an RMSE of 0.310, MAPE 2.73%, MAE 0.228, R 2 0.954, indicating its robustness in handling nonlinear interactions. Sensitivity analysis the SHAP revealed that stability has minimal influence emissions, while feature importance identified population as most determinant. Additionally, results highlight regional variations, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa showing consistent prediction trends, whereas countries like Burundi, Gabon, Mozambique, Zimbabwe exhibit higher uncertainties. These findings underscore necessity policymakers prioritize targeted investments implement enhanced regulatory frameworks, foster cooperation achieve carbon neutrality. also emphasizes value techniques providing actionable insights sustainable development resource-constrained regions.
