Abstract Background Despite impressive dissemination programs of best-practice therapies, clinical psychology faces obstacles in developing more efficacious treatments for mental disorders. In contrast to other medical disciplines, psychotherapy has made only slow progress improving treatment outcomes. Improvements the classification disorders could enhance tailoring improve effectiveness. We introduce a multimodal dynamical network approach, address some challenges faced by research. These include absence comprehensive meta-theory, comorbidity, substantial diagnostic heterogeneity, violations ergodicity assumptions, and limited understanding causal processes. Methods Through application analysis, we describe how advance research addressing central problems field. By utilizing dynamic analysis techniques (e.g., Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation, multivariate Granger causality), measurements (i.e., psychological, psychopathological, neurobiological data), intensive longitudinal data collection Ecological Momentary Assessment), inference methods GIMME), our approach comprehension Under umbrella systems e.g., graph theory control theory, aim integrate from longitudinal, measurements. Results The enables as networks interconnected symptoms. It dismantles artificial boundaries, facilitating transdiagnostic view psychopathology. integration enhances ability identify influential nodes, prioritize interventions, predict impact therapeutic strategies. Conclusion proposed psychological providing individualized models psychopathology suggesting individual angles.

Network analysis is being used increasingly to study disorders such as alcohol use disorder (AUD) at the level of interacting symptoms. However, it remains unclear what insights AUD symptom networks have brought so far. Therefore, this pre-registered systematic review, following PRISMA reporting guidelines, aimed collate and critically assess literature on published networks. 1608 unique articles were collected from PsycINFO, Medline, Embase Web Science between January 2010 May 2023. A total six included in comprising seven cross-sectional The general characteristics are summarized (i.e. edge inclusion, whether connection nodes present or absent; node centrality, importance a within an estimated network) compared population versus clinical samples. many edges, with densities ranging 60% 100% (mean mode 80%, standard deviation 28%). connecting Tolerance Time Spent consuming was most consistently across samples, while edges Physical/Psychological Problems connected only Consuming Larger/Longer than intended, had highest strength failure Cut Down Hazardous Use lowest. Alcohol tend be densely interconnected characterized by high proportion (dependencies variables). Some more found samples vice versa.

Major depression is characterized by an array of negative experiences, including hopelessness and anhedonia. We hypothesize that inhibition experiences or aversion may generate antidepressant action. To directly test this hypothesis, we perform multimodal behavioral screenings in male mice identify somatostatin (SST)-expressing neurons the region X (HBX) between lateral medial habenula as a specific type neuron. SST neuronal activity modulation dynamically regulates induction relief. also explore circuit basis for encoding these modulations using single-unit recordings. find receive inhibitory synaptic inputs from cholecystokinin-expressing bed nucleus stria terminalis project excitatory axon terminals onto proenkephalin-expressing interpeduncular nucleus. This study reveals cell-type-specific HBX encodes action, control contribute to improving well-being.
