Sanitary landfilling is the predominant process for solid urban waste disposal, but it generates leachate that poses environmental, economic, and social concerns. Landfill (LL) contains complex refractory pollutants toxic compounds can vary depending on landfill maturity, age, biochemical reactions, making its treatment challenging. Due to unique characteristics occurrence in remote locations, LL requires separate from wastewater. Various conventional processes involving biological, chemical, physical have been used treatment, a single insufficient meet environmental standards. This review demonstrates combined are more effective efficient compared processes. Among various combinations, chemical–chemical chemical–biological treatments most commonly used. Specifically, integration of Fenton with adsorption membrane bioreactor (MBR) nanofiltration (NF) shows promising results. The MBR NF, adsorption, PF biological show maximum removal efficiencies COD, reaching 99 ± 1%, 99%, 98%, 97%, respectively. Additionally, EC SPF enhance biodegradability as indicated by increased BOD5/COD ratios, 0.084 0.82 0.35 0.75, findings emphasize importance developing implementing enhanced LL, aim achieving comprehensive pollutant mineralization. Such potential address concerns associated contribute sustainable management practices.
