Stakeholder support is critical to the success of ecological restoration projects, and consultation with multiple user groups increasingly a requirement permitting agencies. Despite this, participatory mapping remains "missing layer" in spatial planning projects. We used site selection for oyster reef Sydney Harbour as case study assess how GIS-based habitat suitability modelling might be adapted consider not only biophysical data conflicting estuarine use, but also stakeholder engagement. Specifically, we compared outcomes that; (1) considered parameters that influence native species; (2) included uses negate social conflict, connectivity promote synergies; (3) incorporated perspectives through integration mapping. Models applied indicated 43–93% (depending on species) would more than moderately suitable restoration. When were included, this value fell 11% across oysters. The inclusion further reduced 7%. Our showed selecting sites based solely target species potentially overestimates area therefore increases probability project failure, particularly where stakeholders are supportive anticipated. This demonstrates traditional can enhanced additional human activities support. Importantly, it provides template by which engaged early process inspire local communities play active role activities.

Mechanisms for marine ecological protection and recovery, including area-based conservation tools like ‘Marine Protected Areas’ (MPAs) are necessary to reach the Aichi Target or forthcoming 30x30 target set by Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework. However, full ecosystem recovery takes years manifest idea that MPA alone will foster human well-being is frequently contradicted socio-economic evidence. Therefore, a new framework restoration reconciles discrepancies between growth timelines needed effectively meet global biodiversity targets. We introduce concept of Prosperity Areas,’ (MPpA) an tool prioritizes prosperity as opposed passively relying on catalyze social change economic growth. This leverages suite tried-and-true community-based intervention investment strategies strengthen expand access environmental science, goods services, financial perks blue economy. data-driven may be interest stakeholders who support traditional models, but also those have been historically MPAs excluded from past processes.
