The relationship between sound complexity and the underlying morphology physiology of vocal organ anatomy is a fundamental component in evolution acoustic communication, particularly for fishes. Among vertebrates, mammalian larynx avian syrinx are best-studied organs, their ability to produce complex vocalizations has been modeled. range sounds lineages have attributed, part, bilateral nature anatomy. Similarly, we hypothesize that bipartite swim bladder some species toadfish (family Batrachoididae) responsible nonlinear characters multiple call types they can produce, supported by nerve transection experiments. Here, develop low-dimensional coupled-oscillator model mechanics production two halves three-spined toadfish, Batrachomoeus trispinosus. Our was able replicate structure both courtship agonistic sounds. results provide essential support hypothesis fishes tetrapods converged an evolutionary innovation signaling, namely, relatively simple mechanism dependent on sonic muscles contracting around gas filled structure.

This paper provides an overview of my work on the central auditory system fish. It focuses comparative analyses a nucleus that receives input from inner ear, descending nucleus, and more specifically part supplied by otolith end organs, dorsal nucleus. I begin summarizing initial bowfin, Amia calva, go to explain importance taking approach understanding ancestral specialized anatomical putative functional characteristics in modern bony fishes, teleosts.
