Nowadays, brine produced in the Reverse Osmosis (RO) seawater desalination plants is a significant and largely untapped source of critical minerals metals, which usually discharged into seas as wastewater. As front face stage mining process, nanofiltration (NF) membranes can be used to separate stream monovalent multivalent ion-rich streams. Since high separation factors are required RO brine, polyelectrolyte multilayers with Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique were this study modify commercial polyamide NF improve their performance. Two common polyelectrolytes, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) coated onto two poly-piperazine (NF270 Desal-5 DL). The effects bilayers number outer layer charge on membranes' performance studied using crossflow filtration setups different membrane sizes find higher monovalent/multivalent factor. DL 5.5 provided highest selectivity for mono/multivalent cations (> 21), average rejection group (about 95.7%) short-term experiments. Another interesting result was increase water permeance after it bLs (indicating more than 20% improvement pure permeance).
