Against the backdrop of pressing challenge global climate change and framework United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this study focuses on examining how regional air pollution pressures drive transition towards green practices within higher education institutions (HEIs). This research begins with painstaking manual collection organization transformation data from 113 Chinese HEIs spanning years 2017 to 2022. We construct a comprehensive index for education, including four dimensions: Education Research, Operational Management Efficiency, Green Campus Construction, Social Participation, along 14 foundational indicators. Empirical analysis demonstrates significant positive correlation between HEIs, confirming facilitative role government policy support public environmental awareness in transformative process. further uncovers that timeliness continuity policies are crucial responding accelerating their transition. Moreover, it highlights impact characteristics, revealing economically more advanced regions exhibit stronger response compared those less developed areas. not only enhances understanding interplay among policies, engagement, behavioral changes but also furnishes policymakers, HEI administrators, advocates robust empirical evidence. It underscores urgency multi-stakeholder collaboration, incentives, consideration specifics, thereby providing strategic guidance facilitating transformations advancing attainment sustainability objectives.
