The effect of light, main zeitgeber the circadian system, depends on time day it is received. A brief trip to Antarctic summer (ANT) allowed us explore impact a sudden and synchronized increase in light exposure activity-rest rhythms sleep patterns 11 Uruguayan university students, assess significance history determining individual phase shift. Measurements collected peri-equinox Montevideo, Uruguay (baseline situation, MVD) ANT, included logs, actigraphy, salivary melatonin determine dim-light onset (DLMO), most reliable marker phase. ANT with respect MVD (affecting both light-sensitive windows opposite effects phase) resulted no net change DLMO among participants as some advanced their others delayed it. ultimate cause each participant's distinctive shift relied unique was subjected between ANT. Introduction Despite the growing number of different therapeutic options, treatment depression is still a challenge. A broader perspective reveals benefits bright light therapy (BLT). It stimulates intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, which induces complex cascade events, including alterations in melatonergic, neurotrophic, GABAergic, glutamatergic, noradrenergic, serotonergic systems, and HPA axis, suggesting that BLT effects expand beyond circadian pacemaker.

It is known that the circadian rhythm phase in adults can be advanced a natural light-dark cycle without electrical lighting. However, effect of sleep-wake timing according to on children's unclear. We investigated effects approximately 2 weeks camping life with little access artificial lighting phases. also conducted an exploratory examination wake time sunrise manner advance their phases.Twenty-one healthy children (mean ± SD age, 10.6 1.4 years) participated program (4:00) being earlier than (EW condition), and 21 (10.4 1.1 (5:00) almost matched (SW condition). Salivary dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) before after were compared.DLMO was by h compared daily both conditions. In addition, advances DLMO significantly correlated mid-sleep points camp conditions (EW: r = 0.72, p < 0.01, SW: 0.70, 0.01). These correlations mean greater for delayed sleep habits life. Furthermore, EW condition, (18:09 0:33 h) sunset there no significant decrease interindividual variability DLMO. On other hand, SW (18:43 0:20 lower camp.Camping under sunlight early waking condition may lead large phase.

Light regulates both image- and various non-image forming responses in humans, including acute effects on attention affect. To advance the understanding of light's immediate effects, this systematic review describes monochromatic/narrow bandwidth polychromatic white light during daytime distinct aspects (alertness, sustained attention, working memory, attentional control flexibility), measures affect (self-report measures, performance-based tests, psychophysiological measures) healthy, adult human subjects. Original, peer-reviewed (quasi-) experimental studies published between 2000 May 2024 were included according to predefined inclusion exclusion criteria. Study quality was assessed, results synthesized across grouped interventions; monochromatic/narrowband-width or (regular white, bright with high correlated color temperature (CCT)). Results from (n = 62) showed that alertness memory most affected by light. Electroencephalographic markers improved exposure narrow long-wavelength light, regular CCT. Self-reported testing flexibility inconclusive. Performance-based only influenced Polychromatic exerted mixed self-reported Studies strongly heterogeneous terms stimuli characteristics reporting variables influencing effects.
