Mapping Behavioral Research in Post‐Treatment Cancer Care in Sub‐Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review

ABSTRACT
Objective
This
scoping
review
explores
the
multifaceted
experience
of
cancer
survivorship
in
Sub‐Saharan
Africa
(SSA),
with
a
focus
on
post‐treatment
phase.
The
primary
objective
is
to
examine
psychosocial,
cultural,
and
economic
factors
that
influence
care
outcomes.
Methods
A
comprehensive
literature
was
conducted
using
databases
such
as
Web
Science
Core
Collection
identify
studies
published
between
2000
2023.
Eligible
focused
SSA.
Data
were
extracted,
analyzed,
synthesized
key
themes
research
gaps.
Results
identified
substantial
psychological
distress
among
survivors,
including
depression,
anxiety,
insomnia,
often
exacerbated
by
financial
toxicity
limited
access
psychosocial
support
services.
Cultural
factors,
spiritual
beliefs,
reliance
traditional
healers,
cancer‐related
stigma,
influenced
healthcare‐seeking
behaviors
overall
well‐being.
Despite
these
challenges,
social
networks,
religiosity,
targeted
interventions
improved
emotional
resilience
quality
life.
However,
major
gaps
remain,
insufficient
integration
cultural
beliefs
into
care,
inadequate
long‐term
follow‐up
(LTFU)
programs,
oncofertility
support,
lack
regionally
diverse
longitudinal
data.
Conclusions
Cancer
SSA
shaped
intricate
dynamics
extend
beyond
clinical
care.
Addressing
challenges
requires
culturally
sensitive,
evidence‐based
interventions,
counseling,
integration,
establishment
structured
LTFU
programs.
Additionally,
expanding
integrating
relevant
services
can
further
enhance

collaboration
policymakers,
healthcare
providers,
researchers—through
interdisciplinary
task
forces,

workforce
