Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions likely entails not only lowering but also deploying carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal technologies. We explored the annual potential to store CO in building materials. found that fully replacing conventional materials with -storing alternatives new infrastructure could as much 16.6 ± 2.8 billion tonnes of each year—roughly 50% anthropogenic 2021. The total storage is far more sensitive scale used than quantity stored per unit mass Moreover, reservoir will grow proportion demand for such materials, which reduce costly or environmentally risky geological, terrestrial, ocean storage.

As the raw material transition from fossil to renewable feedstock progresses, demand for biogenic materials industrial purposes will increase. This applies above all energy and chemical sectors. However, capacities carbon sources be provided by agriculture forestry are limited. review examines contribution that CO2 can make sustainable production in EU. It analyses statistical data EU studies industry. First priority needs given edible biomass sector of nutrition. When it comes use biomass, sectors should prioritised cannot do without carbon-supplying materials. is particularly case field organic chemistry. focuses on bio-based products gives an outlook future Europe based primary, secondary, tertiary sources. Finally, two new indicators economically ecologically proposed. Both support determination sustainability status integration agriculture, forestry, residual, biowaste management bioeconomic value networks.

Materials derived from natural sources are demanded for future applications due to the combination of factors such as sustainability increase and legislature requirements. The availability efficient analysis vegetable oils (triacylglycerides) open an enormous potential incorporating these compounds into various products ensure ecological footprint decreases provide advantageous properties eventual products, flexibility, toughness, or exceptional hydrophobic character. double bonds located in many centers chemical functionalization, epoxidization, hydroxylation, nucleophile substitutions using acids anhydrides. Naturally occurring castor oil comprises a reactive vacant hydroxyl group, which can be modified via numerous approaches. This comprehensive Review provides overall insight toward multiple materials utilities functionalized glycerides additive manufacturing (3D printing), polyurethane (including their recycling), coatings, adhesives. work complex list investigated studied throughout available literature describes principles each selected application.

ABSTRACT Industrial crops grown on marginal lands offer a potential source of low‐iLUC feedstock for bio‐based industries, supporting sustainable bioeconomic development. However, marginal‐land‐based bioeconomy systems face significant uncertainties at early stages, such as limited data, farmers' hesitancy to adopt novel crops, undeveloped markets and immature technologies. This study implements an integrated multi‐criteria framework structured, multi‐step approach connect value chain components stakeholders in the research level. The was applied within EU Horizon project MIDAS identify, evaluate combine components, with case Swabian Alb (southern Germany) demonstrating its designing scalable chains tailored regional conditions. Key findings emphasise importance stakeholder collaboration, iterative design processes context‐specific criteria that address technical, economic, social regulatory aspects. approach, based qualitative data input, offers critical insights into feasibility biomass‐to‐product pathways serves foundation advanced research. Future needs focus expanding availability, incorporating quantitative methods, addressing economic market factors, willingness produce feedstocks, enhance scalability robustness facilitate establishment lands.
