Introduction Urban green spaces play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. This study aimed to evaluate the sequestration potential of common plant species urban residential areas and provide recommendations for optimizing space design management. Understanding the impact of climate change and human activities on vegetation dynamics is crucial for ecosystem management. Employing Residual Trend method integrating Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data with land use/cover, this study assesses impacts across China from 2000 to 2018. The findings indicate a consistent upward trend China's Growing Season NDVI (GSN), averaging rate 0.0032/yr. Identifying ecosystem service trade-offs/synergies and their influencing factors are prerequisites for formulating scientific management strategies. We selected Dongting Lake Area as the study area, quantified four key ESs dynamics, including food production (FP), soil conservation (SC), habitat quality (HQ) ecological leisure (EL), identified relationships between paired services using Spearman correlation coefficients, analyzed how various drivers impact trade-offs synergies by leveraging spatial panel data models; we also implemented zoning superposition analysis on services, these drivers. The results showed that FC SC displayed synergy before a trade-off over period 2000–2022. FP–HQ HQ–EL initially synergy, then trade-off, again. To protect forest land from loss and mitigate the global climate crisis, China has proposed a stringent natural protection plan, known as China’s logging ban (NFLB). This policy aims to halt over-exploitation of forests, restore ecosystem functions, promote regional green economic development. study uses regression discontinuity design (RDD) model quantitatively comprehensively assess effectiveness this in key state-owned regions Northeast China. Additionally, it analyzes heterogeneity structural characteristics policy’s effects on internal composition ecological systems. The empirical results are follows: (1) Ecological impacts: successfully achieved its objectives by significantly enhancing quality value services.
