Monitoring programs at sub-national and national scales lack coordination, harmonization, systematic review analysis continental global scales, thus fail to adequately assess evaluate drivers of biodiversity ecosystem degradation loss large spatial scales. Here we the state art, gaps challenges in freshwater assessment for both biological condition (bioassessment) monitoring ecosystems using benthic macroinvertebrate community. To existence nationally- regionally- (sub-nationally-) accepted protocols that are put practice/used each country, conducted a survey from November 2022 May 2023. Responses 110 respondents based 67 countries were received. Although responses varied their consistency, clearly demonstrated being done levels lakes, rivers artificial waterbodies. Programs bioassessment more widespread, some cases even harmonized among several countries. We identified 20 challenges, which classed into five major categories, these (a) field sampling, (b) sample processing identification, (c) metrics indices, (d) assessment, (e) other challenges. Above all, identify harmonization as one most important gaps, hindering efficient collaboration communication. IUCN SSC Global Freshwater Macroinvertebrate Sampling Protocols Task Force (GLOSAM) means address globally-harmonized protocols.

Many studies have quantified dam impacts on riverine ecosystems, whilst fewer compared the efficacy of using multiple organism groups to assess these impacts. Our study small hydropower dams forested lowland river habitats and three above impoundment below reaches in regulated rivers as putative impact riffle unimpacted nearby references. The reference studied here were similar their environmental characteristics, apart from differences flow substratum. Benthic invertebrate macrophyte but not diatom assemblages differed between rivers, analysis traits aided understanding mechanisms underpinning differences. Regulated characterised by benthic indicative fine-textured substrata, such burrowing/boring invertebrates emergent macrophytes, whereas diatoms had a higher frequency disturbance resistant low-profile guilds. Correlation supported importance substratum predictors assemblages. Based our results findings other studies, we recommend continued use for assessing effects urge that greater focus is devoted developing biological trait-based indices better quantify land-use

ABSTRACT Restoration of complex river ecosystems requires an understanding the availability habitat for populations and multi‐scale choices. Habitat unit (HU) mapping classifies habitats, aiding in establishing connection between physical biological conditions rivers. Mid‐scale HU classification can effectively predict fish utilization patterns has been developed applied numerous small to medium‐sized classifications. However, delimitation units (HUs) large rivers remains its preliminary stages. This study used a two‐dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic numerical model calculate data forms ecological expert opinions based on swimming abilities typical species geomorphic characteristics. A procedure was constructed describe mesohabitat heterogeneity HUs fluctuating backwater areas upper Yangtze River. Results indicated: (1) Rich diversity habitats investigated segment. exhibit evident their planar, longitudinal, lateral distribution. (2) Discharge magnitude influences stability HUs, leading transitions types. During storage falling periods, no dominant observed, whereas fast channel dominates during flood period, resulting reduction preferred fish. (3) Field monitoring communities validates potential describing utilization, which such as pools riffles were favoured by fish, while slackwater actively avoided, confirming efficacy procedure. research holds significant implications restoration management.

Macroinvertebrates of the Venta River have been studied since beginning 20th century. However, complex studies along from Latvian–Lithuanian border to its mouth into Baltic Sea irregular and fragmentary. The aim this study was assess ecological status analyze abundance fauna composition macroinvertebrates entire length river in territory Latvia. This is first kind for examining specialization sediment substrates their functional feeding groups. Within framework study, importance assessed 10 sampling sites together with quality using several indices. results show that dominated by benthic invertebrate collectors/gatherers, active filterers, grazers, scrapers adapted particular type sediments formed silt, macrophytes, rocks, pebbles. Different indices were calculated order River. According saprobity index, water corresponds β-mesosaprobity, while mostly average; however, according multimetric indices, varies poor high depending on station.

Macroinvertebrate community composition in regulated rivers is highly dependent on high and low flow events. Significant reduction or augmentation of the downstream from a dam can lead to decrease variety sensitive macrozoobenthic taxa. Such decreases may degraded ecological status. In this research, was investigated river section multipurpose with strategic significance for northeast Bulgaria. Samples were collected five years Golyama Kamchia River, close proximity Ticha dam.
