Farmland ecosystems, as the most active carbon pool, are integral to global climate change and cycling. Therefore, systematically studying roles of sources sinks in farmland ecosystems is essential deepening our understanding cycle meeting goals “peak emissions” “carbon neutrality” agriculture. Using Web Science database, this study reviewed 1411 articles (2002–2023) via bibliometric analysis identify key research themes, trends, future priorities address suggestions for directions ecosystem sinks. The main results include following: (1) Over past 22 years, field has shown a consistent growth trend, with remarkably rapid expansion three years. China, United States, Germany influential countries. As scope expanded, evolved into an interdisciplinary domain. (2) diversity area become enriched, content becoming more refined systematic. topics focus on sequestration, soil organic (SOC), management, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, stocks, services, land use changes, change, spatiotemporal heterogeneity. (3) Current hotspots primarily microbial sequestration mechanisms, application remote sensing technologies, reducing GHG emissions achieve neutrality”. While existing studies have elucidated mechanisms mediated by aggregates, microorganisms, minerals, critical knowledge gaps persist. Regional disparities relative contributions these remain unresolved, compounded methodological inconsistencies assessment that introduce substantial uncertainties. Although management practices identified pivotal drivers flux variation, interactive effects anthropogenic interventions natural factors ecosystem-scale balance require further mechanistic exploration. This review provides comprehensive reference devising effective emission reduction strategies.
