Abstract Three‐dimensional (3d) numerical models are state‐of‐the‐art for investigating complex hydrodynamic flow patterns in reservoirs and lakes. Such full‐complexity computationally demanding their calibration is challenging regarding time, subjective decision‐making, measurement data availability. In addition, physically unrealistic model assumptions or combinations of parameters may remain undetected lead to overfitting. this study, we investigate if how so‐called Bayesian aids characterizing faulty setups driven by parameter combinations. builds on recent developments machine learning uses a Gaussian process emulator as surrogate model, which runs considerably faster than 3d model. We Bayesian‐calibrate Delft3D‐FLOW pump‐storage reservoir function the background horizontal eddy viscosity diffusivity, initial water temperature profile. consider three scenarios with varying degrees different velocity measurements. One forces completely unrealistic, rapid lake stratification still yields similarly good accuracy more correct global statistics, such root‐mean‐square error. An uncertainty assessment resulting from indicates that scenario fast through highly uncertain mixing‐related parameters. Thus, describes quality correctness geometric characteristics posterior distributions. For instance, most likely values (posterior distribution maxima) at range limit widespread characterize poor calibration.

Abstract The water quality in the Danjiangkou Reservoir has attracted considerable attention from Chinese public and government since announcement of Middle Route South to North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), which commenced transferring 2014. Integrated research on evaluation, prediction, protection was carried out this study order improve environmental management. Based 120 samples, wherein 17 indices were measured at 20 monitoring sites, a single factor evaluation method used evaluate current status quality. results show that main influencing are total phosphorus (TP), permanganate index (COD Mn ), dissolved oxygen (DO), five-day biochemical demand (BOD 5 concentrations TP, BOD , ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 –N), COD DO, anionic surfactant (Surfa) do not reach specified standard levels tributaries. Seasonal Mann–Kendall tests indicated concentration shows highly significant increasing trend, TP trend Reservoir. distribution predicted using two-dimensional numerical model, showed sphere influence tributaries can spread across half Han if pollutants controlled. Cluster analysis (CA) suggest Shending River is heavily polluted, Jianghe, Sihe, Jianhe rivers moderately they should be focus remediation.

Abstract Estimations of reservoir bathymetry and storage are great significance due to their substantial impacts on hydrological processes water resource management. However, existing approaches for construction often rely field measurements, which restricts application at regional global scales. This study proposes a novel Approach Determining the BAthymetry channel‐type Reservoirs, hereafter referred as ADBAR, only open‐access digital elevation model (DEM) satellite images required. The basic idea ADBAR is utilize geomorphological similarity topographical continuity inundation area with its lateral valleys upstream/downstream regions predict underwater bathymetry. Forty‐eight reservoirs different topographic geometric characteristics were selected method validation. all impounded after year 2000, so modeled can be validated by “reference” calculated using exposed topography in SRTM DEM mapped extents from spectral images. difference between estimated reference storages about 13% average. Furthermore, results two basins dense distributions, Upper Yellow River Basin China Tocantins Brazil, comparable documented effective capacities. validations both individual large demonstrate that robust tool estimating bathymetries capacities thus facilitates modeling budgets

Abstract. The presence of elevated total dissolved gas (TDG) downstream a spillway may result in an increased incidence bubble disease fish. Supersaturated TDG is transported and dissipated more slowly reservoirs than natural rivers because higher water depth lower turbulence thus endangers This paper presents the operational regulations concerning mitigation supersaturation impact on fish Bala Reservoir Zumuzu River. includes joint operations upstream power stations. A laterally averaged two-dimensional model employed to simulate transportation dissipation addition hydrodynamics temperature. According comparison simulation results different scenarios, this suggests regulation scheme. With respect station, adoption interval-discharge pattern instead continuous-discharge recommended minimize negative effect reservoir caused by supersaturated TDG. surface tunnel rather bottom as release structure. reference for eco-environmentally friendly operation large deep reservoirs.

Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) is one of the largest man-made lakes in world. Since impoundment 2003, however, algal blooms have been often observed tributary embayments. To control blooms, a thorough understanding hydrodynamics (e.g., flow regime, velocity gradient, and magnitude direction) embayments particularly important. Using calibrated three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, we carried out analysis typical embayment (i.e., Xiangxi Bay) with emphasis on longitudinal patterns. The results show distinct gradients study area, which can be generally characterized as four zones: riverine, intermediate, lacustrine, mainstream influenced zones. Compared zonation for pure reservoir, there an additional zone near mouth due to strong effects TGR mainstream. are prone occur intermediate lacustrine zones; conditions riverine influence zones not propitious formation blooms. This finding helps diagnose sensitive areas bloom occurrence.
