Understanding the relationship between environmental temperature and biological traits of organisms is fundamental to inferring potential impacts climate change. In case marine poikilotherm species, seawater one main driving forces processes, with consequences at higher levels organization such as population ecosystem. this study, we analysed differences in maximum carapace width (CWmax), size maturation, relative duration reproductive season for green crab (Carcinus maenas) along a gradient. An extensive review bibliographic data was performed on studies published 1962 2020, gathering C. maenas from 55 different populations, spread over 20 degrees latitude 14.2 °C sea surface (SST). addition, were collected five lagoons estuaries continental Portuguese coast. The average SST CWmax, age reduction egg bearing understand role variation these characteristics across latitudinal There significant CWmax males CW females respectively. results extrapolate each local projected increase caused by change suggest an effect morphometric regions. These changes comprise overall body size, enlargement season, shortening larval developmental time, decrease crabs maturation. Secondary fecundity connectivity populations are discussed.

Abstract In biologically diverse ecosystems, an essential process to support competing species coexist is ecological differentiation. Habitat heterogeneity is, hence, important in establishing abundance and richness, favoring the coexistence of due habitat partition. this context, shading thermal tolerance can be good factors elucidate role partition among closely related species. Herein, we study effects microhabitat selection, behavior, physiological limitation on two fiddler crabs ( Leptuca leptodactyla uruguayensis ). Indeed, conditions influenced proportion over time, with L. more associated nonshaded/warmer areas while shaded/cooler ones. They also adjusted their behavior differently from each other deal stress. Finally, have demonstrated that these are species' limitations. We conclude such as intertidal regions estuaries (e.g., mudflats mangroves), between by reducing competition

Saxitoxin (STX) causes high toxicity by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, and it poses a major threat to marine ecosystems human health worldwide. Our work evaluated the neurotoxicity chronic toxicology of STX Caenorhabditis elegans an analysis lifespan, brood size, growth ability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, overexpression green fluorescent protein (GFP). After exposure series concentrations for 24 h, worms showed paralysis symptoms fully recovered within 6 h; less than 5% died at highest concentration 1000 ng/mL first larval stage (L1) 10,000 fourth (L4) worms. Declines in productivity, body size C. were observed under stress 1, 10, 100 STX, lifespan was shorter that controls. With exposure, productivity declined 32–49%; including length area, 13–18% 25–27%, respectively. The levels ROS exhibited gradual increase over time, accompanied positive effect resulting 1.14–1.86 times higher compared control group L4 Conversely, no statistically significant differences between L1 Finally, after 48 ATP GFP expression dose-dependent increase. study reports evidence is not lethal but imposes substantial oxidative on elegans, with dose-responsive relationship. results indicated ideal model further mechanisms underlying fitness organisms caused paralytic shellfish toxins STX.

Determining the sexual maturity of male fiddler crabs based on morphological observations is a challenging task.In this study, we attempted to determine onset in crab, Gelasimus hesperiae, by considering body morphometry and histological characteristics reproductive system.Crabs with carapace lengths (CL) from 2.0 22.0 mm were randomly sampled field measured for widths (CW) major propodus (MPL).The (CL 50 ) was determined be CL 11.0 using Lysack's model, accordingly, those below designated as immature.Allometric growth estimation regression analysis between immature mature groups revealed positive allometry MPL.Since, system not visible stage 1 (with < 7.0 mm), they considered physiological maturity.Between 2 7.1-11.0mm) > there significant difference (p 0.05) width testes, length vas deferens, tubules accessory sex gland. However, principal component (PCA), no discrete cluster formation these groups, especially 8.0-11.0)close .Further, histologically, testes showed signs spermatogenesis spermiogenesis similar that found crabs, indicating fulfilment maturity.Overall, our results indicate commencement G. hesperiae precedes maturity, hence, external morphology cannot sole criterion determining species.

The growth rates and size at maturity of decapod crustaceans usually vary throughout latitudes. Here, we evaluated whether these life history traits can be stable within the same latitude range, where some environmental factors are constant, especially temperature. To this end, estimated compared sexual three populations fiddler crab Minuca vocator, located 23° S, in mangroves subtropical Brazilian coast. Variations rate abdominal width females propodus major cheliped males were assessed by allometric technique. abdomen varied among populations, resulting different sizes maturity. These results do not support our prediction that would remain range. differences could a consequence contrasting local conditions mangroves. Therefore, suggest crabs show plasticity responsiveness to local-scale variations, optimize energy allocation for maintenance, reproduction, somatic growth.
