Hydrogen is a crucial energy carrier for the Clean Energy Sustainable Development Goals and just transition to low/zero-carbon energy. As top CO2-emitting country, hydrogen (especially green hydrogen) production in South Africa has gained momentum due availability of resources, such as solar energy, land, wind platinum group metals (as catalysts electrolysers), water. However, demand insignificant, which implies that majority must be exported. Despite positive developments, there are unclear matters, dependence on national electricity grid cost transporting it Asian European markets. Hence, this study aims explore opportunities economic expansion sustainable production, transportation, storage, utilisation produced Africa. This paper uses thematic literature review methodology. The key findings available renewable sources, incentivizing economy, carbon taxation, increasing could decrease from 3.54 1.40 €/kgH2 thus stimulate its usage, export. appeal lies diversifying products an carrier, clean electricity, synthetic fuels, ammonia methanol, fertilizers, steel with principal purpose significant decarbonisation foreign earnings. These expected drive African revolution agreement AU 2063 agenda.

This study examines the impact of alcohol blends on performance and emissions aviation micro-turbojet engines. Thus, propanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol, heptanol, octanol were tested at 10%, 20%, 30% concentrations mixed with Jet A, as well an additional 5% heptanol blend to preserve base fuel properties, a JetCat P80 micro-turbojet. Physicochemical properties such density, viscosity, elemental composition analyzed before engine testing. Carbon dioxide (CO2) from 1 kg combustion varied, propanol yielding lowest 3.02 CO2 per highest 3.22 fuel. The following results obtained: lowered exhaust gas temperature by up 7.5% idle intermediate thrust but slightly increased it maximum power; mass flow concentration, peaking 20.4% above A for propanol; varied −4.92% +7.4%. While specific consumption 12.8% thermal efficiency declined 1.8–5.6% remained within ±2% A. Butanol emerged viable alternatives, balancing reduction efficiency. emphasize need optimal trade-off between environmental performance.

Published: April 6, 2025

The production of hydrocarbon-based biofuels has been the target intense research worldwide. In this context, core goal present work was to investigate use mesopore-rich activated carbons (ACs) as support for sulfided Mo-based catalysts intended hydroprocessing lipidic feedstocks. key motivations were that, in comparison traditional inorganic supports such Al2O3, ACs are less propense form coke, due their lower acidity, and highly resistant hydrolysis, which is a very important aspect feedstocks because water abundantly produced during process. Furthermore, porosity can be tailored give rise high mesopore content, improving access bulky triglyceride molecules metallic active sites located inside pores network. A systematic study on effects preparation conditions properties performance obtained carried out first time. highest hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activity verified catalyst prepared through sequential deposition Mo Ni by wet impregnation. presented better coconut oil HDO than an industrial NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst. it good stability, provided that sulfidation degree kept high. results evidenced have great potential replace catalysts.
