Abstract Carbon reduction during the operational phase of buildings is a critical component in achieving global carbon neutrality objectives. Current methods for estimating dioxide emissions this predominantly focus on national or city-level scales, often ignoring heterogeneity building types and functions. This oversight limits precision with which low-carbon management technologies can be applied to retrofit existing effectively. To address gap, we develop building-based accounting approach at city-scale that considers type, function, floor area, height individual building. Additionally, integrate point source data from facility-level power plants characterize structure energy supply sector. We then propose suite emission tailored buildings, constructing baseline, regulatory, blueprint scenarios analyze pathways 2020 2050. Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a crucial instrument in the construction industry, offering comprehensive evaluation of environmental impacts at every stage building’s lifecycle. Recently introduced into Finnish legislation, this approach has not yet been thoroughly researched relation to Ministry Environment (FMoE) assessment method, nor have new calculation techniques proposed address its shortcomings. Furthermore, research on impact predominantly focused residential buildings, leaving scarcity studies office buildings. This paper aims fill these gaps literature, considering LCA, carbon footprint, and handprint tools concrete-, timber-, steel-framed cases. Our results are as follows: (1) majority footprint concrete-framed case originated from emissions associated with energy use second largest share total occurred during product phase building within phase, services contribute most product-related emissions; (2) significant portion came facades floor structures; (3) timber-framed option was significantly lower than that concrete- counterparts; (4) option’s nearly equivalent option; (5) estimated considerably higher options, primarily due storage capacity timber components; (6) surpassed because high recycling reuse potential steel (7) LCA method used by FMoE some unclear areas. These ambiguities include how assess carbonation cement-based products replacement components.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a detailed analysis of embodied carbon (EC) in various case studies using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Through comprehensive assessments, including modules A, B and C, the study evaluates EC across different stages building cycles. also considers savings achievable through current end‐of‐life strategies UK context. As Module A accounts for highest studies, majority reduction should focus on this stage. The most impactful strategy reducing emissions involves incorporating Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as replacement cement. approach has potential to achieve substantial concrete within buildings under investigation, ranging from 60% 70%. reveals that specification can lead significant Whole Life Embodied Carbon (WLEC) reductions, with residential achieving 30.59% reduction, college 46.86% hotel 23.69%. Effective mitigation strategies, such utilizing recycled reclaimed materials, demonstrate promising results, showcasing WLEC buildings.
