Interactions of cellulose- and lignin-derived intermediates have been well documented during pyrolysis lignocellulosic biomass. The reaction network for the interactions is rather complex, as cellulose-derived volatiles could interact/react with not only but also char vice versa. To probe specifically impacts on or opposite, herein sequential was performed by arranging cellulose in upper bed lignin lower above below at 350 650 °C, respectively. results indicated that cellulose→lignin lignin→cellulose °C induced increased yield from formation carbonaceous deposits via volatiles-char interactions. Compared volatiles, especially aldehyde fractions, were more reactive towards forming oxygen-rich a higher yield, an abundance aliphatic structures consequently thermal stability. In lignin→cellulose, aromatics-rich species deposited char, less enhancing yield. At instead polymerisation either catalyzed cracking counterpart to remove functionalities, which made aromatic thermally stable.
