Abstract Island communities are particularly vulnerable to climate change and energy insecurity; renewable can counter both threats. This study takes a whole island approach scoping wind solar potential. The Isle of Man (IOM) was selected because the limited development renewables date, plus high reliance on imports. Potential sites for were evaluated using social, environmental, technical, economic political factors in combined Geographic Information System (GIS)‐multi‐criteria decision analysis (MCDA). We find that 9% is highly suitable onshore development, 2% photovoltaic. These areas could potentially yield 107 MW from 150 solar. Roof top floating add further 30 MW, offshore 497 MW. total potential 784 much greater than historical (85 MW) projected (131 demand by 2050. Hence, our first stage estimates suggest combinations significantly improve security even support exports IOM. demonstrated GIS‐MCDA modelling offers tool resource other energy‐import dependent islands.
